Rumor: Coolpix P6000 - Return of the Serious Nikon Compact?

Chipouille in the Fred Miranda forums has posted information regarding a new compact from Nikon featuring RAW, an optical viewfinder, 28-112mm (equivalent) zoom, hot shoe, and optical image stabilization along with a 13.5MP, 1/1.7" sensor. The source for the information is not specified in the thread. This camera would be a unique offering. No other currently produced compact offers a wide angle lens, RAW, and an optical viewfinder.

Looks like same sensor as in Sony DSC-W300 that impressed Mr Reichman at Luminouslandscape.com - it may be more useful than its bloated MP count may suggest - especially with RAW. Nikon is finally competing again in the serious compact category.
Interesting stuff! Finally Nikon returns to RAW - if this is true :) Quite interesting this comes out the day Thom Hogan was making "bumper stickers" to encourage Nikon to add "serious" Coolpix models!
Grood news if this is true, Nikon seems to be 'waking up'... But after reading (disappointing) reviews of Coolpix 5000 and 5100, I am a little skeptical of how useful this camera would be (specially with 13.5mp) to the serious photographer. Let's wait and watch.

Looks good. One hopes that Canon will respond with a G10 sporting Canon's new CMOS sensor for compact cameras. The new large CMOS sensors are due to start production in Japan this month. Photokina should be interesting.

"No other currently produced compact offers a wide angle lens, RAW, and an optical viewfinder"

My Ricoh GRD2 with GV-2 viewfinder does ;-)

Have you folks noticed the Ricoh-style popup-flash on the P6000?

The whole design has a "Ricoh-look" which is not bad ...
I've got a 3 year old Canon S70 that has a 1/1/7" sensor, 28mm(equiv) lens, and shoots RAW. Fewer megapixels (though basically the same usable image resolution) and no stabilization, but in 2008, I would've hoped there would be more progress...
(And I think the Ricoh GX100 and, now, GX200 both have the small sensor, RAW and even wider lens).
Mr Hogan (on the dpreview Nikon forum) confirms that there is a Coolpix P6000 on the upcoming Nikon camera list but cannot confirm the specifications. Maybe if there is an APS sensor "serious compact" in the works they will hold onto that as big news for Photokina.
If Ricoh are about emulating the glory days of the film GR series - why can't they do something about the lack on a internal OVF on the GX and GR ?____http://old.photosharp.com.tw/cameraimage/ricoh/ri...managed to squeeze in a decent amount of info into their film body OVF , so why is it a problem now -especially on the GR with a fixed focal length lens- how much easier does it get ??__External OVF and electronic VF may look cute - but are an added expense, take up the hot-shoe and prevent use of a external flash and they dont have any information so you are still forced to check the LCD for data.
Sorry about the Ricoh comment above on this thread - somehow pasted wrong message! Yet the comments on the OVF probably apply to anything Nikon or Canon will put out as well...
