About Us

Serious Compacts is a photography site focused on the "serious" use of compact cameras.

These days it seems that many people associate serious photography with the use of large, heavy gear. Our site features testing and discussion of the remarkable compact tools available to photographers. We also highlight some of the outstanding work being done with this gear.

From an equipment standpoint, we are of course interested in advanced compact cameras, i.e. cameras which offer full manual controls, RAW, and other special capabilities. However, our interest extends to include quality photography achieved with any compact cameras, advanced or otherwise.

Individual site contributors may have differing takes on what is "compact." Discussion of large gear is primarily limited to that which is relevant to the compact shooter (eg, a "shootout" between a particular set of large and small cameras), though we reserve the right to occasionally go well off-topic =).

Hi, Amin and friends!

After a hard search in march into the depth of digital photography to find the right, first digital camera for me, I ended up with a Ricoh GX100 after swaying from dSLR to ultracompact.

Now I visit your blog, which I fell over at the end of this decisionmaking, regularly because I find it really interesting how possibilities are discussed.

Welcome Xeno, and thanks for saying hello!
Recommendation for a P&S with excellent Macro capabilities
New to blogging- so probably screwing this up- I apologize in advance. I must say that this site is fabulous! After spending years lugging around film bodies and lenses when traveling (Canon F1s) I've decided to go light but wanted something nicer than a base P&S. I was back and forth between the G10 and LX3, and got both for christmas! The LX3 was my first choice, but it looked like it was in short supply, so my wife ordered the G10 as backup. I really like the LX3, but like the longer range of the G10. I've ordered the tele lens for it and am anxious to see how it goes.

Maybe seeing some pics that look like they're from Howard County has influenced me a little.

Thanks, Bob
Hi Amin,

Really a very interesting site. I´m searching for a serious camera that I can take for my mountainbike tours but with a good film like quality. I currently use a Canon G10 which is not really satisfying but when I´m rich I will go to a Leica store to buy a digital M.
