Canon S90 Now In Stock at Some Stores

The new Canon Powershot S90 IS is beginning to show up in stock in some retailers. I was able to pick one up at Best Buy today. Apparently it was the only S90 left in any of the Boston area Best Buy locations. Preliminary impressions coming soon!

The S90 is currently listed as "In Stock" at Butterfly Photo via Amazon, whereas most other retailers are still showing status as "expecting delivery from Manufacturer..."

i just bought mine too here in NYC, and handling wise i'm extremely disappointed. feels empty, boxy and plasticky. the control dial feels like My First Camera. and unbelievably for such a light camera, the power button is almost impossible to reach with just one hand.

Amin, please do a quick IQ comparison with the LX-3/D-LUX4 and even the G10. i may just have to forego the zoom, return this and get the GRIII.
This shall be interesting. I'm really curious how it competes against m43s in IQ up through ISO1600. What is this so called magic Canon claims to have achieved =)

Though, at $400, I went ahead with my GF1 pre-order (c'mon Panasonic, give Adorama their shipment already...). I know I won't be able to get the DOF I want, so I won't try to pretend a small sensor will get it for me. I'll just get a cheap SD1200 if I want something truly pocketable.

I've taken just a few shots so far, but let me tell you, there is no magic here. This little Canon simply does not compete against MFT in low light unless you put a slow zoom on the MFT camera. I do plan to test it against the Ricoh GRD III, and that will be a much more close fight.
Heh, yeah, pretty much figured it couldn't compare. More interested in how "acceptable" it is really. My tolerances change for what's acceptable based on the camera, but at the cost vs what I wanted, the portability factor just wasn't enough for me (still a pipe dream though)
The little SD1200 is really no slouch, I got one for my Boyfriend on his birthday and am very pleased with the results he gets!
It is no 4/3 by any means but it is a tiny 'go-with' camera indeed!
yeah, I've seen it's samples. Actually, for something that size, I still think canon's SD200 was great.. just lacked IS. If I only didn't crack it in my pocket... hence the desire for a cheap, small, anywhere camera.
Amin, I'm planing to buy this camera and I'm VERY interested in seeing some samples. Please post on the DPI forum! I know you used to have the LX3. How does it compare to it? If you're not happy with it I'll take it off your hands right now :-)

cheers,

Rafa

Bit too soon for me to say how it compares to LX3, which I no longer have on hand for comparison. Will try and get some samples up soon.
I just picked mine up at the Best Buy in NYC on 44th and 5th Ave. They didn't have the S90 on display but when I called, they said they had it in stock and they held one for me. They did have the G11 on display. I was in a hurry to get back to work so I didn't have a chance to play with the G11. If I had to guess why BB has the S90 in stock before everybody else I'd say it's because they are the last of the big box retailers. Most people want to try a camera before buying it and I bet Canon recognizes that the sooner they get cameras on display, the more they will sell in-store and online.
